Below are a few quick tips on how to book your dialysis abroad:

1. Start early – begin the process about one month before your trip, but not more than two months in advance, as centers may not yet have their schedules ready.

2. Follow up politely – if you don’t receive a reply within a week, send a friendly reminder and start looking for an alternative option just in case.

3. Confirm availability first – always check with the dialysis center if they have space before booking your hotel or flight.

4. Ask what they need – once the center replies, ask what documents or lab results they require and whether they have a specific form to fill out.

5. Ask about payment – most centers require payment before your treatment. Contact your home health insurance provider to ask how reimbursement works. They must cover dialysis for you at home, so they are also required to reimburse you for treatments abroad — but you need to get approval before traveling. Keep in mind that reimbursement is usually limited to the cost of dialysis in your home country.

6. Coordinate with your doctor – forward the center’s request to your nephrologist and ensure all required tests are done within the timeframe the dialysis center specifies.

7. Confirm your booking – once everything is sent, kindly ask the center to confirm your appointment and check where exactly the dialysis unit is located within the hospital.
