I travelled to Skien on dialysis and wanted to share how it went, so you know what to expect before you go.
The dialysis care
Skien is a short drive from Oslo, with fresh Nordic air and a pace of life that resets you. The care was calm and professional, and everything ran smoothly.
The food
This was the real highlight. Hands down the best dialysis meal I have ever had. If you go, you are in for a treat.
What it costs
Norway accepts the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Without it, the price is around 400 euros. One important thing: all your documents must be in English, and your serology and MRSA tests must not be older than 14 days.
How to find the dialysis
Address: Ulefossvegen 55, 3710 Skien, Norway.
Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/NcWdwzJjQyef76pd8
Contact person: Yngvild Bjorbaek Nilsen, yngnil@sthf.no
What you need to bring (all in English):
Your medical history, prescription chart, and dialysis protocol.
Recent blood sampling results.
Serology within the last 2 weeks: HIV antibodies and antigens, Hepatitis B surface antibodies, Hepatitis B core antibodies, Hepatitis B antigens, Hepatitis C antibodies, Hepatitis C RNA.
MRSA test within the last 2 weeks (nose, throat, groin, and the catheter or fistula exit site).
A valid European Health Insurance Card.
A passport copy.
They do not have their own form.
Would I recommend Skien?
Yes, and not just for the food. Norway is calm and beautiful and the care was good. Just get your tests done close to your travel date and have everything in English.
We organise group trips for dialysis patients, so you do not have to plan it all alone.
