Dialysis on Tenerife, Spain: Review of Hospital del Sur de Tenerife

Updated: Jul 3

I travelled to Tenerife on dialysis and wanted to share how it went, so you know what to expect before you go.

The dialysis care

The care was good. The center was clean and well run, and the team looked after me from the start. It felt calm and professional, and I had no problems with the treatment.

One thing to know: Canarian Social Security system

Tenerife is in Spain, so if you are an EU patient you can use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). One important thing to know: to be accepted with the EHIC, you first have to be authorised by the Canarian Social Security system. Before you travel, send a request with your medical report, your European card, and your valid passport, including the dates and the name of the center (Hospiten Sur University Hospital), to this email: dirmedica-hunsc.scs@gobiernodecanarias.org. Sort this out in advance and there will be no surprise when you arrive. Probably, they won't answer your email, so after a few days, check with the Hospiten Sur if you are approved.

How to find the dialysis

The dialysis center is Hospital del Sur de Tenerife (Hospiten Sur University Hospital).

Address: TF-28, 21, 38652 Arona, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

Contact person: Miriam. Email dialisis.sur@hospiten.com

What you need to bring:

A clinical summary.

A recent medical report.

Your medical history.

Allergies.

Dialysis guidelines.

Results of HIV, HBs-AG (Hepatitis B), HCV, and MRSA, taken within 4 to 6 weeks before your first session.

Passport or ID.

They use their own form. You can download it here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/10_H89YRDmP-Ef-GilOkvv6JGnhp4jshF/view

Would I recommend Tenerife?

Yes. The care was solid, the sun is there all year, and after dialysis, the ocean and the island are waiting for you. Just sort out the EHIC authorisation in advance.

We organise group trips for dialysis patients, so you do not have to plan it all alone.
